Kaine and Bechtel Corp. in bed to prevent metro tunnel

It is a wonderful thing when the sun points directly on a solution to a transportation problem. But why do politicians have to be the ones to roll in the clouds. It seems this time it is Governor Tim Kaine who is continuing his push for an elevated track through Tysons Corner rather than supporting a tunnel that makes economic sense, is less expensive and will cause less disruption during construction.

I was flabbergasted when I read Kaine and his staff said it is better to proceed with the project, imperfect as it may be, and get it done on schedule — with construction starting next year and reaching Tysons by 2012 and Dulles by 2015.

Growing up my mom drilled into me, “it’s not worth doing unless you do it right.” Clearly Gov. Kaine would rather through his arms up and do nothing just to get the rail line completed. He’s ruining the entire project.

Just about everyone supports the tunnel option but it is Bechtel Corp. that has a stake in the elevated track option. Bechtel was chosen to construct the elevated track and will have less of a role if the tunnel option proceeds. Is Kaine in bed with Bechtel? You bet.

More information in the story in The Washington Post and at TysonsTunnel.org.

PS – Speaking of Metro, upon entering the Vienna station today, I came across this space age looking cylinder displaying video of stations with metro info tickering across the bottom. How much did this thing cost? What about fixing the escalator in Vienna that has been inoperable for months?
